LANSING, Mich. – Deep Green, a global leader in sustainable, high-performance computing  infrastructure, today announced plans to build a first-of-its-kind 24-megawatt (MW), ultra-efficient data center in downtown Lansing. The $120+ million project combines powerful computing capacity with a groundbreaking approach to carbon-neutral heat recovery, making Lansing a national model for sustainable technology and clean energy innovation.

Deep Green designs and operates ultra-efficient, high-density data centers that capture and reuse the heat they produce with negligible water use. The company will partner with the Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) to supply free, carbon-neutral heat directly into BWL’s hot water system, cutting carbon emissions and creating lasting community benefits.

Benefits the Lansing community can expect from this development include:

  • A $120+ million capital investment generating $1 million in additional annual revenue to the city from its partnership with the BWL, as well as significant property tax revenue.
  • Delivering over $1.1 million in annual natural gas savings to the BWL through reduced demand, equivalent to 5,000 homes and more than 310,000 MCF.
  • Reducing carbon emissions through recycled heat at a rate equivalent to removing 3,000 cars from the road each year.
  • Creating good-paying union and high-tech jobs during construction (35+ jobs) and operations (15+ jobs) that drive long-term economic impact.
  •  Supporting local nonprofits and charities with a contribution of $6,000 per MW of contracted data center usage, up to $120,000 annually, with portions going to programs like Pennies for Power, which supports families struggling to pay their utility bill.

“Our mission is to accelerate the decarbonization of heat for the benefit of people and the planet. By capturing and reusing heat that would otherwise be wasted, this project transforms Lansing’s energy landscape, turning technology into a local sustainability solution. We’re proud to partner with the city of Lansing and the Board of Water & Light to make this vision a reality.”

Mark Lee, Chief Executive Officer, of Deep Green.

The facility will have a negligible impact on water use thanks to a closed-loop cooling system with hyper-efficient performance and near-silent operation. Deep Green also plans to design the site to integrate seamlessly into Lansing’s downtown environment, with an emphasis on safety, aesthetics and community collaboration.

“Economic development and repurposing surface parking lots continues to be a priority. Deep Green’s proposal to develop and better utilize these city lots will provide not only urban infill and density, but will also be a major investment and dynamic innovation in our downtown. This project will generate more than $1 million in additional revenue per year for Lansing, which could be used for so many city needs – from police officers and fire fighters, to corridor improvement and assistance to those that need social services. At the same time, it will meet sustainability goals while reducing future utility rate increases. This unique project will strengthen our local economy, support good-paying jobs, and move us closer to a cleaner, more resilient high-tech future.”

Andy Schor, Lansing Mayor.

For Lansing BWL General Manager Dick Peffley, the project is an ideal partnership.

“Working with Deep Green allows us to take another big step forward in cutting carbon emissions and reducing natural gas use for our hot water system, which will minimize future rate increases for those customers, and also increase our return on equity to the Lansing community,” said Peffley.  “At the same time, we’re able to support attracting a business that is truly the foundation of our region’s high-tech economy.”

Dick Peffley, Lansing BWL General Manager.

Deep Green’s Lansing data center will initially operate within the BWL’s existing generation capacity, eventually transitioning to new, cutting-edge technology on-site, ensuring reliable, efficient service without adding costs to current customers. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2026, provided that final approvals are secured from local and state partners.
